Over the past 15 years, long term care insurance has become increasingly popular. The reason being is that people are living longer lives than ever before – often requiring assistance in their later years. Long Term Care Insurance helps cover the expenses associated with an individual’s inability to care for themselves. Typically, the expenses associated with long term care coverage are not provided for by other forms of insurance. Under long term care coverage, benefits are paid if an individual is unable to perform at least two activities of daily living – such as bathing, continence, dressing, eating, toileting, and transferring for a period of at least 90 days, OR if an individual requires continued supervision due to cognitive impairment. In the past, when an individual reached that stage of life, they would enter a rest home facility, or have a family member care for them. Long Term Care Insurance provides individuals with options: they can enter a facility of their choice, or pay for a medical care provider to take care of them in their own home (some policies will even pay an individual’s family member to provide care).
