At HWP, we recently received a call from a client that was looking at a $3,500 repair bill for some front end work needed on his auto. A local mechanic told him that the damage appeared to be a broken weld, which had caused additional damage to adjacent parts. The client recalled an accident that happened two years earlier where damage was sustained to the same location, and wondered if there might be a correlation.
Together, we submitted a new claim and the car was taken back to the auto body shop that had originally done the repairs. After inspection it was determined that the damage was a result of the earlier accident. Since the car was fixed at an approved body shop the insured has a lifetime warranty (as long as he owns the car) on all repairs, and the damage was repaired at no cost.
Most insurance companies have approved or preferred body shops that will offer the same lifetime warranty as long as the repairs are made at these shops. The advantage to the policyholders is that they can have their estimate and repairs done at one location. You are not required to have the work done at these shops but you will only have the warranty offered by the repair facility (usually one year), and not the carrier warranty.
