Understanding your Automobile Coverage’s

Have you reviewed your automobile coverage’s with your agent lately and do you understand the coverage’s provided? Bodily Injury liability insurance is required for every registered vehicle in California and you can add optional coverage’s to your policy. Here are a few key terms to understand:
- Bodily Injury Liability protects you from legal claims by others for accidents you caused (or were partially responsible for). California’s requirement on Bodily Injury liability is only $15,000 per person and $30,000 maximum per accident, but in today’s litigious society that limit may not be sufficient enough in the event of a claim. It is suggested to secure enough liability insurance to cover the total value of all your assets
- Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage provides coverage for a policyholder involved in a collision with a driver who does not have liability insurance or who does not have sufficient liability limits to pay for damages, subject to policy limits. Uninsured Motorist comes in two parts: uninsured motorist bodily injury (UMBI) and uninsured motorist property damage (UMPD). UMBI coverage pays for injuries to you or any person in your car when there is a collision with an uninsured/underinsured driver. UMPD coverage pays for the property damage to your car when there is a collision with an identified uninsured driver. (if your vehicle does NOT have collision coverage the maximum payment for UMPD could be up to $3500)
- Collision Coverage pays for damages caused by a driver who is at fault for an accident or pays for a damages caused by a hit and run driver
- Comprehensive Coverage covers damages caused by other than a collision such as theft of a vehicle, vandalism, glass breakage, falling objects,etc
- Medical Payments covers the medical costs (up to the specified limits on the policy) resulting from an auto accident for you, your family or others in your car; regardless of fault
- Rental Car Reimbursement pays for the expense to rent an auto due to a covered loss under comprehensive or collision benefits. This does not apply for a mechanical breakdown situation
- Towing & Labor coverage provides coverage for towing and labor costs up to the limit specified on the policy
