The Small Business Authority recently looked at cyber security in its monthly SB Authority Market Survey. It found that most small businesses do not fear cyber attacks, nor do they have a plan to deal with them.
The survey found that:
29% of small businesses were cyber attacked last year
59% suffered damage to reputations as a result of the cyber attack
49% had business information stolen
48% experienced network and data center downtime
The majority of the attacks were done with viruses and malware.

The first line of defense is a good IT security system. Along with that, not visiting untrustworthy websites, and not opening emails from unknown senders, was found to be the most effective way of avoiding problems.
The second line of defense is a Cyber Security insurance policy. Cyber Security insurance coverage is not expensive, and provides coverage for expenses and potential lawsuits that might arise from a Cyber attack.
