Earthquake Preparedness – Are You Ready?
Southern California has been on shaky ground this year…literally. With recent quakes such as the April 4th Baja Mexico at 7.2 and July 7th San Jacinto at 5.4 on the Richter scale, we may all need to refresh ourselves on earthquake safety. Without any warning that an earthquake is coming, panic can immediately set in and our thoughts are “What am I supposed to do, where am I supposed to go?” Having a plan and knowing what to do when an earthquake occurs can provide comfort as well as ensuring the safety of yourself and your family. If you are a business, having an emergency plan can help ensure the safety and well-being of the employees you are responsible for.
Knowing the safest places in your home and workplace is a good start. Know your exits and make sure they are always clear. Learn how to shut off the gas, electricity and water. “Duck, Cover and Hold” is still the recommended action by the Red Cross and the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services during an earthquake. Drop to the floor under a sturdy table or desk for protection. Cover your head and neck with your arm to protect from flying debris. Avoid spots near large furniture, windows, hanging objects and mirrors. Hold on to a leg of the table or desk that you are under and be prepared to move with it until the earthquake stops.
