With the weather experts predicting an El Nino season, we at HWP Insurance recommend the below useful tips to help minimize a loss to your home. Flood damage is not covered under a Homeowners policy.
• Clear gutters of debris, ensuring downspouts are clear and water drains are away from the home
• Check roof for any possible leaks
• If you have a balcony or deck that slopes make sure the water flows away from the house in to a drain system
• Make sure your yard drains properly
• Examine your windows and recaulk as needed
• In the event of high winds, properly maintain trees, make sure tree branches are cleared away from the home
• Secure your yard, reinforce any fence if needed and store anything that could blow away with high wind
• If you have basement or crawl space that is subject to flooding consider buying a sump pump. Or if you have a sump pump make sure it is in working order and perhaps install a battery backup system in the event of a power outage
• Store emergency repair materials such as sand bags in a safe dry place
• Talk with your neighbor, if your home is below another home find out if your where your neighbor’s property drains
• Invest in a generator in case there is a power outage
• Stock up on sandbags, check your local area for free sandbags
• Talk with your agent about possibly buying flood insurance
