If you have a summer vacation outside of the United States planned this summer, and will be renting a vehicle, please check with your insurance professional to see if your auto coverage will extend. Most auto policies do not extend coverage to foreign countries, with the possible exception of Canada. Chances are, you will need to make other arrangements for insurance coverage on the foreign rental vehicle, including liability coverage.
Some tips to make sure you have proper coverage while abroad:
• Check with your auto insurance agent to know exactly how your auto insurance coverage would apply to your situation.
• Check with your credit card company to see if they offer coverage on the rental vehicle you will be driving. In this situation, make sure the coverage extended includes liability and physical damage coverage.
• If neither of the above apply, ask your rental car company about purchasing insurance directly from them. Again, make sure the coverage includes not only physical damage coverage on the rental car, but also liability coverage to protect you from bodily injury or property damage you may cause to others.
By taking a little time before you leave to make sure you have the proper coverage will help insure you have an enjoyable vacation.
