During these uncertain times many employers are cutting back on health insurance, leaving more individuals to shop for new health insurance plans to cover children or other family members. Health insurance coverage can be expensive; keep these rules in mind:
- No More Denials for “Pre-Existing Conditions” – New federal laws state all children under the age of 19 must be offered health coverage if they apply.
- Apply Before March 1st to Avoid Higher Costs – Open enrollment for children ends March 1st. To avoid higher premium costs, enroll your children before March 1st. If you enroll after that date, you could face much higher premiums as there are no limits on premiums outside the open enrollment period. After March 1st, the next open enrollment period is the month your child was born.
