As an insurance agent, I’ve recommended to clients that they complete and store an up-to-date home inventory guide. To my surprise, most people have no idea what I’m talking about.
Why do you need a home inventory guide?
You arrive home from work one day, and to your dismay, your home is smoldering in ashes. After you come to grips with the situation you contact your agent and file a claim. The carrier’s claims adjuster contacts you and you submit a statement. Then they ask you to create a list of everything in your home that was lost in the fire.
Do you think you could mentally walk room by room of your old home and recall each and every item? Now add to that challenge emotional distress, panic, and frustration.
For this reason, the department of insurance has come up with some great tips to help prepare for a home disaster and avoid the above scenario, by completing a home inventory guide.
3 home inventory guide options:
- 1. Walk around your house with a video camera, video every drawer and commentary about each item. Then email to someone offsite; or take photos around the house. There are also companies that will provide this service for you.
- 2. Download a home inventory application on your iPhone or Android. Both are available.
- 3. Download the Department of Insurance paper version of the home inventory guide. If you complete this option, you’ll want to send a copy to family members or store in an email account that is accessible from any computer.
