Starter Homes Are going Tiny!
The new craze for first-time buyers is the “Tiny House”. What is a “Tiny House”? Tiny houses take small homes to whole new small, in size tiny homes range from 100 to 400 feet. Each tiny house typically contains a living area, kitchen, bathroom, a sleeping loft, and some include an outdoor deck or patio.
Tiny houses come in all shapes and sizes; some have pop-out walls, decks, and ceilings to increase the living area when not on the move. What makes a tiny house different than a motorhome or RV? Tiny houses are built with traditional home building material and can be stationary or made to fit on a trailer for easy movement.
We’ve listed a few reasons why you may want to pay attention to this phenomenon…
Looks Like a Home, Not a Trailer
Tiny houses are made to look, feel and function like a normal home; just a condensed version. Say goodbye to the Trailer/RV manufactured appearance of metal and plastic. Each tiny home is made with aesthetics in mind, some are built in the “typical” house design with a pitched roof, while others are more bungalow or cottage like, and some are whimsical with pirate or castle themes. Also, most traveling trailers are not very well insulated, but since tiny homes are custom built, properly insulating the home to stay cool in the summer, and warm in the winter, is a priority, but not a concern.
Own a Home, Without the Mortgage
Traditionally when you own a home, you own the land and the structure, the tiny house trend allows people to own a home, without needing to own the land it is built on. It is possible to build these homes, so they are entirely self-contained, generating water and electricity – eliminating not only a mortgage but also utility bills. It is important to note that the legalities of what land tiny houses are accepted on is still ongoing.
Tiny houses have become a popular trend for aspiring homeowners, due to the freedom of movement and from a large economic burden. Tiny homes make way for a life with more flexibility while simultaneously traveling in the comfort of your home.
Environmental Benefits
One of the biggest advantages of owning a tiny house is the environmental benefits. Due to it’s smaller size, the amount of resources consumed to live is reduced, and overall encouragement to consume less is reinforced. Environmentally friendly building materials, the use of renewable energy, and reduced consumption amounts to a much smaller environmental footprint. Also, since the entire home is much smaller, using quality and/or reclaimed materials for indoor and outdoor construction of the home, is much more affordable. Overall living life more simply through living with less is encouraging the tiny house owner to look at a more sustainable future.
